Browse all trucksUp to 5,000 lbs is light-duty work. Small campers. 16–18 ft fishing boats. Single-axle utility trailers with a side-by-side. If you’re towing more than that, you’re in the wrong bracket.
In Nebraska, these trucks are daily drivers first, tow rigs second. Omaha commuters. Lincoln college kids. Small contractors hauling mowers in Norfolk. Prices in 2026 for 2015–2022 models with 60k–130k miles run $15,000 to $28,000 depending on brand and condition.
The rating number assumes proper hitch setup and no overloaded bed. Most people ignore payload. That’s where problems start.
Toyota Tacoma
Most V6 Tacomas from 2016–2023 are rated around 6,400–6,800 lbs, but realistically they live comfortably under 5,000 lbs for regular towing.
Pros:
Cons:
I took in a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport in Lincoln. Owner towed a 4,500-lb pop-up camper to Lake McConaughy every summer. Truck handled it. Averaged 12 mpg towing. But he admitted crosswinds on Highway 2 made it work.
Tacoma is fine at 3k–4k. Push it near its rating every weekend and you’ll feel the limits.
Ford Ranger
2019+ Rangers rate up to 7,500 lbs, but under 5,000 lbs is where they stay comfortable long term.
Pros:
Cons:
In 2024 I sold a 2020 Ranger XLT in Grand Island for $24,900 with 82k miles. Buyer hauled a 3,800-lb aluminum boat and trailer. That’s the right pairing. Would I want that truck dragging 6,500 lbs every weekend? No.
Chevrolet Colorado
GMC Canyon
Gas V6 models tow up to 7,000 lbs depending on configuration. For steady use, keep it under 5,000 lbs.
Pros:
Cons:
I appraised a 2018 Colorado LT in Kearney. Owner pulled a 4,800-lb enclosed trailer for his HVAC side business. 96k miles. Rear shocks were tired. Transmission had already had fluid flush under warranty. That’s typical.
These trucks are fine when used within reason. Abuse shows fast.
Ford F-150
Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Ram 1500
Most half-tons tow far beyond 5,000 lbs. If you’re only towing up to 5,000, you’re well within their comfort zone.
Pros:
Cons:
If someone in Omaha is towing a 4,000-lb camper six times a year, a half-ton barely notices it. Transmission temps stay reasonable. Suspension stays level without airbags. It’s overbuilt for that load. That’s not a bad thing.
Almost everything under 5,000 lbs is gas-powered.
Pros:
Cons:
Diesel in this category rarely makes financial sense. You’d be paying for capability you’re not using.
2WD:
4x4:
I’ve seen 2WD trucks sit longer on lots in Columbus and Fremont. Buyers want 4x4 here. Market reality.
At 5,000 lbs, trailer brakes matter. Without them, stopping distance increases noticeably. Especially on wet pavement.
Payload still applies. Four adults at 180 lbs each plus 500 lbs of gear is 1,220 lbs before tongue weight. Many midsize trucks only allow 1,400–1,600 lbs total payload.
People ignore that number. Then they wonder why the rear sags.
Under 5,000 lbs is manageable with the right truck. Go light, maintain it, and it’ll last. Push the edge of the rating constantly and you’ll shorten its life.
