In Nebraska, these are everywhere. Omaha suburbs, Lincoln commuters, small contractors in York and Beatrice. Prices right now for 2016–2021 models with 80k–140k miles run $19,000 to $34,000 depending on brand and trim.
The rating assumes a properly equipped truck. Tow package. Correct gearing. Brake controller. Not every half-ton on a lot qualifies for the top number in the brochure.
Ford F-150
Most 2.7L EcoBoost and 5.0L V8 models fall in the 7,000–10,000 lb range. 3.5L EcoBoost can go higher with Max Tow, but we’re keeping this bracket capped at 10k.

In 2022 I had a 2018 F-150 XLT 5.0L in Lincoln rated at 9,100 lbs towing. Owner pulled a 7,500-lb camper five times a year. Truck handled it fine. Averaged 9–11 mpg towing. That’s realistic. Same truck trying to tow 9,800 lbs regularly would feel different.
Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Most 5.3L V8 models rate between 8,000 and 9,800 lbs depending on configuration.

I took in a 2017 Silverado 1500 LT from Fremont rated at 9,400 lbs. Customer towed a 8,200-lb enclosed trailer for his lawn business. Rear shocks were worn at 95k miles. That’s normal when towing near the upper end.
These trucks do fine at 6k–8k regularly. Push them near 10k every week and wear shows up sooner.
Ram 1500
Most 5.7L HEMI models land between 7,000 and 10,000 lbs depending on axle ratio.

In Kearney I appraised a 2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn rated around 9,000 lbs. Owner towed a 8,500-lb camper twice a year. Added weight-distribution hitch to control sway. Without it, rear end sagged noticeably.
Ram rides better empty. That comfort costs you firmness when towing near the top of the range.
Toyota Tundra
Most 5.7L V8 Tundras from 2014–2021 rate between 8,000 and 10,000 lbs depending on configuration.

In 2023 I sold a 2019 Tundra SR5 in Papillion rated at 9,800 lbs towing. Buyer pulled a 7,000-lb boat and trailer setup. Perfect use case. Try to tow 9,500 lbs weekly with it and you’ll feel the strain in braking and suspension.

Some midsize trucks rate between 5,000 and 7,500 lbs.

A 2020 Ranger rated at 7,500 lbs came through my lot in 2024. Owner towed a 6,800-lb camper. It worked. But crosswinds on I-80 made it more work than a full-size half-ton would have been.
Midsize trucks belong closer to 5k–6k steady towing, not at their ceiling.
In the 5,001–10,000 lb bracket, almost everything is gas.

Diesel doesn’t make sense financially in this range unless you’re towing constantly and stepping into heavier classes.
Tow rating assumes minimal cargo in truck. Add 600–800 lbs of passengers and gear. You’re closer to payload limit than you think.
Weight-distribution hitch is almost mandatory once you pass 7,000 lbs. Not optional if you care about control.
Brake maintenance becomes more frequent. Rear pads and rotors wear faster when towing mid-weight trailers regularly.
These trucks handle 6k–8k comfortably if maintained. Near 10k repeatedly is where suspension, transmission fluid, and cooling system discipline start to matter.
