Browse all trucksNow you’re in real heavy-duty territory. Upper-end 3/4-ton diesels. Most 1-ton single rear wheel diesels. Some older dual rear wheel trucks rated in this band depending on configuration.
If a truck is rated 15,001–20,000 lbs conventional or gooseneck towing, it’s built for sustained load. Frame, axle, cooling system, brakes. All heavier.
In Nebraska, 2016–2022 diesel 2500 and 3500 SRW trucks in this range with 80k–150k miles are listing between $36,000 and $68,000. Dually models push past that. Clean farm trucks with documented service sell fast in Grand Island, Kearney, and Columbus.
Sticker and axle ratio matter. 3.31 gears won’t rate the same as 3.73 or 4.10. Cab configuration changes numbers too.

Ford F-350
Properly equipped 6.7L Power Stroke models from 2017+ often fall between 15,000 and 20,000 lbs towing depending on setup.
Pros:
Cons:
In 2023 I sold a 2019 F-350 SRW in Lincoln rated just under 18,000 lbs conventional towing. Owner hauled a 17,000-lb gooseneck with a compact track loader weekly. Truck handled it. Rear tires were replaced every 35k miles. That’s the cost of torque and weight.
F-250 can reach the lower end of this towing band, but F-350 is better suited if you’re near 20k regularly.

Duramax diesel with Allison transmission sits solidly in this 15k–20k range depending on year and configuration.
Pros:
Cons:
I took in a 2018 Silverado 3500HD SRW from Hastings. Rated around 19,000 lbs gooseneck towing. 142k miles. Owner hauled cattle across central Nebraska twice a month. Rear brake job cost him over $1,600 at dealership rates. Big truck parts cost big money.
Denali trims drop capacity slightly because of added weight. Work trims keep numbers higher.

Ram 3500
Cummins diesel is common in this towing bracket. 2019+ models improved transmission durability.
Pros:
Cons:
In North Platte I appraised a 2017 Ram 3500 SRW rated just over 19,000 lbs. Owner hauled a 16,000-lb fifth wheel camper every summer from Nebraska to Montana. Added aftermarket airbags because the rear sagged under pin weight. Airbags fixed stance. They don’t change axle rating.
Ram 2500 can reach the lower end of 15k–16k ratings. 3500 is better if use is consistent and heavy.
Most trucks rated 15,001–20,000 lbs are single rear wheel. Dually trucks often exceed 20,000 lbs towing ratings.
Single rear wheel pros:
Single rear wheel cons:
Dually pros:
Dually cons:
If towing near 20k often, dually gives more margin. Single rear wheel works but leaves less buffer.
Gas engines rarely live comfortably in this range. Some 6.4L or 7.3L gas heavy-duty trucks rate near the lower end, but they work hard doing it.
Gas pros:
Gas cons:
Diesel dominates this bracket because torque and fuel economy matter when hauling 17,000 lbs across I-80 in crosswinds.
At Omaha auto auctions, diesel 3500 SRW trucks rated near 20k consistently outbid gas trucks by thousands. Buyers know what they’re buying them for.
Towing 18,000 lbs isn’t just about engine. Brakes, tires, cooling system, and rear axle matter.
Trailer brake controller must function properly. Integrated systems are better than cheap add-ons.
Regular fluid service is not optional. Transmission, differential, transfer case. Skip intervals and you shorten lifespan.
Insurance premiums are higher. Registration fees reflect vehicle weight and value. Maintenance is heavier. Everything is heavier.
This range is not casual towing. It is repeated heavy use. Heavy-duty trucks handle it. Half-tons do not belong here.
That’s the boundary.
