Power locks aren’t luxury anymore. If the truck was built after 2005, it probably has them. On half-tons and three-quarter-tons in Nebraska, manual locks are rare unless you’re staring at an old XL work truck or a stripped fleet unit.

Power locks mean actuators in each door, a body control module, wiring through the door jamb, and a key fob system. That’s convenience. It’s also more failure points.

Cons:

• Actuators fail. Especially on 2015–2018 models. I’ve replaced multiple driver-side actuators around 80k–120k miles.
• Door wiring harness in the aluminum-body years can fatigue. Then the lock works when the door is half open but not closed. Annoying to diagnose.

I took in a 2016 F-150 XLT in Kearney with 104,000 miles. Customer said “sometimes it locks, sometimes it doesn’t.” Driver door actuator was weak. $340 repair. Not catastrophic. Still money.

• Actuators can click but not move the lock. That’s a worn gear inside.

Replacement cost per door usually $300–$500 depending on labor rate in Omaha. Not cheap if two doors go at once.
